All summer appointments (excluding summer session appointments) for academic year staff ("C" basis) are considered summer service appointments. A full-time appointment for an entire summer service pay period (30 or 31 days) is equal to 1/9 of a "C" basis appointment. Appointments less than a full summer service pay period are compensated on a prorated basis. For example, a person working 15 days of a 30-day summer service pay period would be paid 1/2 of 1/9 of the previous academic-year rate.

It is the policy of the UW-Madison that any faculty, academic staff, or limited appointee on an academic year (9-month) appointment may not exceed eight months summer salary over any three-year period. See Chapter 11 of the Unclassified Personnel Policies and Procedures .
